In her capacity as an Igbo translator and cultural consultant, Yvonne has worked in various projects and organisations which include: The UK Justice system, Universities, TED Conferences, BBC, Arsenal Football Club, UK National Theatre, UK Office of National Statistics, DuSable Museum Chicago, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Cambridge, The South London Gallery, Moonlighting Film Production services (Cape Town, South Africa), Host Publishers (Czech Republic), Anambra Broadcasting Service Radio/TV (Nigeria) and the British Library.
DECOLONIZATION OF ETHNOGRAPHIC ARCHIVES / INFORMATION DESIGN
Yvonne is a Research associate at Museum Affordances, an extensive project about re-engaging with Colonial Archives in Decolonial Times. This remarkable ethnographic archive included objects, photographs, sound recordings, botanical specimens, published work and fieldnotes – assembled by the colonial anthropologist, N. W. Thomas, in Southern Nigeria and Sierra Leone between 1909 and 1915. Yvonne's transcriptions, translations and re-recorded audios from the Northcote Thomas Audio collection are permanently kept at the British Library. She is also currently involved in redesigning research information from the project in a digestible and interactive online format for the public.
APPLIED LINGUISTICS / CONTENT CREATION / LANGUAGE TUTORING
A self taught Applied Linguist, Yvonne continuously explores the wonderful complexities of language and looks for ways to tackle real-world language problems with a special focus on Igbo and other African languages. She does this by researching language using knowledge, theories and practices in language, culture, linguistics and communications to explore, challenge and solve real problems facing indigenous African languages. Yvonne’s work also extends to designing identity themed merch, by using themed apparel to communicate cultural awareness, pride and identity. Her TEDGlobal 2017 talk, Combatting the decline of African Languages, has been very well received.
Yvonne is the author of the first and bestselling illustrated Igbo dictionary for children. She has taught Igbo language Masterclasses at SOAS, University of London and University College London (UCL).She is also the founder of Learn Igbo Now, an online resource that creates didactic Igbo language and culture learning resources.
Yvonne runs a very popular Youtube Channel (Learn Igbo), where she posts videos about learning Igbo language and culture.
In her previous role as a Lecturer at the University of Greenwich for over five years, she taught undergraduate and post graduate courses on Digital media, Social Media Marketing and Business information technology. Drawing on her experience as a digital strategist and director at T-One Technologies, an IT solutions firm in the city of London, she also guided students on Business Projects, a recurring program that connected students with local businesses, which helped them gain experience by working on real life marketing campaigns and projects.
CULTURAL HERITAGE EVENT CURATION - IGBO STUDIES
For the past ten years, Yvonne has been the co-convener of the Annual International Igbo conference, which she also co-founded. The Igbo Conference is organised in partnership with the Centre of African studies, SOAS, University of London. The event is a forum for discovering the Igbo culture, language and heritage. The Annual international Igbo conference aims to promote Igbo Studies within the UK and beyond, and seeks to bring academics and members of the Igbo community together for the purpose of knowledge sharing and exchange.
Part of the activities of the Igbo Conference has been organising and curating the very successful Legacies of Biafra Exhibition, in conjunction with the Nigeria Art Society UK (NASUK).
VISITING SCHOLAR / RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
Yvonne is a visiting scholar at The Centre of African Studies, SOAS, University of London where she undertakes various research on Africa, and groundbreaking projects about Africa like the N W Thomas decolonizing project, as well as curating the Annual International Igbo Conference since 2012.
HISTORICAL FILM MAKING / RESEARCH
Yvonne currently has a hybrid role at Stelo Stories, a media company based in Tel Aviv, Israel. Stelo is an innovative, award-winning, vertical film studio that tells important stories on social media. Stelo Stories combines storytelling and technology to tell urgent stories that leave a mark. They are the creators of Eva.Stories and the aim is to make history accessible to young people.
